Improving the SEO on your BC site

Rangs Graphics would like to point out a few features on your Adobe Business Catalyst website and how you can improve its Search Engine Optimisation (or how Google ranks your website) with a few small tweaks.

Your Business Catalyst website has great inbuilt functionality for SEO.

1. You can easily add SEO metadata tags to your webpages in the page editing feature.

2. Once your site is live we submit a sitemap.xml file in Google Webmaster tools so that Google can easily crawl and index your website.

4. Having a responsive layout for your website.

3. When editing your webpages there are some technical aspects that you need to know.

Adding SEO Metadata to your web pages

Since early in 2015 Google has been placing an emphasis on pages that make sense to humans, rather than the 'spiders' that search and index webpages. The pages in your website now have a great new feature called SEO metadata. When editing a webpage you can now add a sentence in this area that Google will use when indexing your website.

You can access the SEO Metadata field when editing the pages on your website. If you need a refresher on how to log in and do this go to this page.

Here is the field Site Manager/Pages where you can add the SEO Metadata. Add a sentence summarising what the webpage is about and what your business is offering.

The Sitemap.xml file for your website will be registered in Google Webmaster Tools by Rangs Graphics

One of the SEO features of a Business Catalyst Website is the sitemap.xml file, which is a system file generated in BC when your website goes live. This file is a structured document that lists all of the public pages in your website. (Secure items are not listed)

If you want to check what your sitemap.xml file look like put in your domain name and then /sitemap.xml

It is a page of code that tells Google what your webpages are called and how recently they have been updated.

At Rangs we use a Google Webmaster account to submit your website to Google, and upload the sitemap.xml file. Once the sitemap file is submitted to Google, it will crawl the site and index all the public pages on it. This then makes your website more visible to Google and thus also to the web world.

The sitemap.xml file updates automatically every 24 hours and if you have done any page edits these changes will be notified to Google, which will crawl your website again to check the content.

Because your site is registered in Google Webmaster account, Rangs also gets updates should any problem arise with your website, such as an expired domain name. So this is a useful tool for us to keep an eye on your website.

Responsive websites

Early in 2015 Google announced that it will be checking whether websites are mobile friendly. IF they are not that will affect their ranking in search results. If you do not yet have a mobile website with us, please have a read here about how we can help you achieve this.

Page content updates - a few SEO friendly hints

There are several things you can do to improve the Google ranking of your website. This ranking is how high up your website appears in Google search results.

One of the most important things you can do is to regularly update the content on the pages of your website. Recent research suggests that 25% of SEO optimisation is from the words and headings on a webpage. Google is looking for real websites with real information that people can use. It downgrades sites that use tricks such as invisible text (eg. blue text on a blue background).

It is a good idea to log in monthly to your website, go to the Site Manager and look through the pages on your site. Update the wording, add new information to your pages. Make your site a source of new information all the time.

Any changes in the text of your webpages will be registered in the sitemap.xml file. The sitemap.xml file refreshes in the back end of your BC website every 24 hours. Any changes to the sitemap.xml will then be noticed by Google and it will index the changed pages again.

Google rewards websites for updating their content regularly and remaining current, so this will help your site improve its ranking in web searches.

When updating the content on your webpage keep in mind that Google likes the following:

1. Only one H1 header on your webpage - so just the title of your webpage should be formatted as H1
2. You can have as many H2 or H3 headings on your page as you like. Words marked as H2 or H3 as second only in importance to words with H1 with Google
3. Bolding key phrases or words also alerts Google to the fact that this phrase is important.
4. Having links to other websites and having other websites linking to yours also helps improve your site ranking.

Setting up a Google Business account

One really useful thing to do to improve your website SEO is setting up a Google Business account. This is something you need to do from your own Google+ account. There are quite a few steps involved, so there is a separate page on how to do that here.

Google indexing and SEO improvements will take several months to show results

Once you have done the steps above, Google will then index your website. This is not going to happen overnight. In fact any tweaks to your website SEO, including adding metadescriptions to pages, setting up a Google business account and the Rangs registration of your sitemap.xml file will take several months to show results. Remember, there are over a billion websites and webpages out there and the largest search engine Google has indexed one quarter of them. So the activities will help Google to notice and 'crawl' your website, but this is a process that will happen over 2 to 6 months.

What's next?
